J. Robert Surface grew up in Charleston County, South Carolina, in a devout, hard-working Christian family. After attending the College of Charleston, Robert went on to graduate from the University of South Carolina Law School in 1978. He worked as an Assistant City Attorney for the City of North Charleston, then joined the federal government as an attorney, focusing on Social Security disability hearings and appeals.
Robert returned to the private sector in 2007 and launched a career representing clients with disabilities. He is admitted to practice before the US District Court of South Carolina, and he is a VA certified attorney. Robert is in good standing with the South Carolina Bar Association and the Supreme Court.
